What do forward, aft, port, and starboard mean?

A: Here’s your crash course:

  • Forward: Front of the ship.

  • Aft: Rear of the ship.

  • Port: Left side when facing forward. Easy to remember since both “port” and “left” have four letters.

  • Starboard: Right side when facing forward.

Sgt. Quacker’s Tip: In a hallway and not sure of which way is forward? Look down! Many ships have patterns or objects, like schools of fish that point towards the front of the boat.
